Full Size Bed
Full size beds are perhaps the most versatile size of all beds on the market. At home in a child’s room, a young adult’s studio, a guest room, or even a master bedroom, full size bed frames come in styles for each and every situation and lifestyle. Which one you choose is simply a matter of personal taste.
Because full size beds are used in so many different circumstances, our collection of bed frames runs the gamut. We carry not only traditional full size bed styles like full panel and platform, but also full size beds with bookshelves for headboards, and beds with canopies above or storage below. That means that your new full size bed will function the way you want it to, whether you want to tuck it against the wall or make it the focal point of your entire bedroom.
Full Size Storage Beds vs. Full Size Non-Storage Beds
Full size beds can come with or without storage; choose with if the size of your bedroom space does not allow for an extra dresser (and you have more linens, clothes or shoes than you know where to put).
Why Choose the Full Size for Your Bed?
There are many bed sizes – each popular for the spacious comfort – with Full being on the lower end of size (it’s the second smallest in standard mattress sizes). Why, then, choose Full when there are bigger beds to choose from? The Full size may not be dimensionally blessed, but this in fact comes to its advantage for certain lifestyles, rooms and comfort preferences:
- Choose a Full size bed if you want more space in a small room. Any bedroom that isn’t a master bedroom will require some clever laying out of furniture in order to maximize every square inch of space – and keep a spacious feel. A Full bed is the perfect in-between size, if you’re too tall for a Twin and don’t need all the bed that comes with a Queen size.
- Choose a Full size bed if you want the spacious feel of a Queen bed without the bulk. While a Full bed isn’t the largest, it also isn’t the smallest. Deceptive in size, Full beds look compact compared to the larger Queen and King sizes, but are actually quite big for the average adult. If you don’t share a bed with a partner and you want to free up some space in your room, opt for a Full.
- Choose a Full size bed if you want a bed your child can grow into. Children grow up fast, and a Twin bed isn’t always going to be the most reasonable choice for comfort. While a Full bed for a younger child may feel too big at first, time flies by – and when growing pains start to kick in, your child will be glad to have all the space they need for a great night’s sleep.
Components of Full Beds
Here are a few things to think about when deciding on the best one for your space:
- If the bed is a ship, the headboard is the captain – and the footboard is the headboard’s first mate. Not as prominent as the headboard but still eye-catching and functional, the footboard keeps feet and blankets from dangling off the edges and provides an aesthetic balance for the end of the bed.
- Wooden slats. Wooden slats on a bed are necessary to keep the mattress supported and breathable. Metal slats are also available, but wood is more common. The closer together the slats are, the less likely you will need a box spring.
- A bed’s material is more about looks (if you want comfort, pay attention to the mattress type!) but can still affect the way you feel, especially if you tend to lean up in bed against the headboard. Go with a padded fabric design if you use your headboard as a backrest.
- Under bed storage. Under the bed storage is drawers, trundles, and shelves – all designed to help you store essential items.
- Some folks may experience a harder time climbing into and out of bed; if you find a standard frame is too high for your comfort, go with a lower mattress profile – or lower bed profile. Even a couple of inches can make all the difference in the world.
- Storage space. Storage space other than the kind underneath the bed comes in the form of overhead shelves – think bookcase headboards.
What Kind of Mattress Should You Place on a Full Bed?
Mattresses come in many sizes, and the size of the bed should match up to the size of the mattress. For a Full bed, you would need a Full size mattress – this is also known as a Double mattress amongst some retailers. The type of mattress you place on your Full bed doesn’t matter – memory foam, innerspring and hybrid can be placed on any type of platform; what you do need to consider, though, is whether or not a box spring is required, as a too-thin bed frame won’t provide enough support for any type of mattress.
Full Beds for Guest Rooms
Full beds are your best option for guest rooms. Since guests range in age, size and comfort preferences, you’ll want a bed that’s not too big and not too small – something in between that will be familiar to most people. While Twin beds are usually for children and Queen-plus beds are usually for couples, Full is usually for one adult – but can also accommodate a couple.
Since guest rooms are on the smaller side, the size of Full beds make decorating easier than if you were dealing with a larger bed type. (Making the bed is a lot easier when the perimeter of the bed is within reach from one side!)
If you find yourself with a guest for whom a Full size is too short, there is an easy workaround: simply place a bench (choose a bench that sits at the same height as the mattress) at the end of the bed to extend the profile a bit! Just make sure to remove the footboard so that your guest’s legs can comfortably extend onto the bench while they sleep.
And for choosing bedding for your guest room, go with neutrals, which are universally calming.
Full Size Beds: A Summary
Purchasing a new bed can be a big decision, but choosing a Full size of bed solves many problems in one. The Full bed size is the perfect in-between for anyone who is too big for a Twin and too small for a Queen. Designed for one adult sleeper, Full beds can also work for couples (though they will feel a bit cozy). Opt for Full beds with storage for loose items that need a home in your bedroom. And remember, if you’re looking to furnish a guest room or provide a child with a bed they can grow into, the Full size is your best choice!
