Is the ladder functional or decorative?

It is both, holding 180 lbs body weight, & each shelf holds 188 lbs. That's functional. It is pretty, & the sliding ladder is reminiscent of the fabulous old libraries that had ladders out of necessity. That's decorative.

Use of the ladder with 1 or more bookcases that adjoin one another

if the ladder were purchased, is there a way to have it go across several of these adjoining book cases, or is the ladder only for 1 bookcase? Thanks!

Ladder weight capacity

Everyone keeps saying the ladder is decorative but the LSProduct Team says it's functional. Is it indeed functional and if so, what is the weight capacity? Also, can it be moved to a second unit even if they're not right next to each other?

The Barton 103" Bookcase With Ladder has a recommended weight capacity of 180 lbs. The ladder attaches to the top of the shelf via two hooks. It is not affixed to the shelf and can be moved between two shelves placed next to each other.

Is the top finished?

I'm considering these in a room where the top of these shelves will be visible from from the floor above. Some other tall entertainment center furniture that I had did not have a finished top surface - making difficult to look nice from above. I'm hoping the top is finished much like the sides.

Next day I was coming back to the Katy Store after delivery for an exchange of the 3 PIECES!!! Sadly disappointing: one of the pieces was clearly a distinct color compared with the other 2 bookshelves (and the ones we saw in the store), one came with a bent metal pole, and these were the ones you notice immediately.... A close look showed several damages, from broken parts to awfully bad repaires. I was expected to receive today 2 of the 3 (the third one had to be shipped from California) but a delay was advised for one didn't passed the quality inspection and would be sent to be REPAIR. Well I pay close to $2,500 for each because a want new pieces not repaired ones... decided to cancel all and look for a refund. The store in Katy was attentive, kind, and helpful. I DO NOT RECOMMEND buying these pieces. If you decide the risk, be advised to perform a remarkably close check when delivered.

The room is just to the left as you walk in the door. We have had so many complements on the room since the purchase. What a difference these have made! They are tall and stately. We love the industrial look and fits well with our brick accent wall. They are about 9ft tall so If you have the room, and want your furniture to make a bold statement, I would highly recommend

Rated 3 out of 5 by Carol from Barton Bookshelf I recently ordered 3 Barton bookcases. Two of the units delivered are absolutely beautiful. Just as they were pictured and described. However, one of the units delivered, was not acceptable. 4 of the 5 shelves are warped and made of a different type of wood and stain color. Very poor quality. Not sure if it had been damaged and returned, or a manufacturing issue? We were told new stock would be in on two different occasions to replace the unit. It's been 6 weeks since I ordered and still no resolution. Still waiting for a manger to contact me to resolve the issue.
