Book Shelf Art but with Direction
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.maziball3 years agoLove the detail of this telescope with compass at the base. Just a wonder rendition of spyglass fits on my bookshelf of "Believe" which sits atop the shelves and gives it a certain "direction" to see beyond our limits.

Ahoy Ye Landlubbers!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.CaptBill3 years agoAn alidade is a nautical device used to take bearings on a fixed object on land as viewed from a boat or ship. The optics on the alidade allow one to see the object through the telescope while at the same time you can view the face of the compass to observe the bearing (magnetic in this case) of said object. You then draw a line on your navigational chart representing that bearing. The object might be a building such as a lighthouse or the edge of an island or point of land- anything that also ... appears on the chart. Preferably, you want to "shoot bearings" on at least three objects or points that are a good distant apart. The point at which the observed bearing lines cross is the position of your vessel at the time of the observation. Hopefully, it is out in the water and not on the rocks! This little knick-knack probably wouldn't do for actual navigation but it is a nice addition to any room that might like a touch of something nautical.
