If you’re looking to bring effortless elegance and luxurious lounging into your living room, bedroom or even home office, look no further than a settee.
What Is a Settee?
A settee is an extended chair designed for more than one person (usually two people can fit on a settee). Most settees come in armless and backless designs, allowing for versatility when placing the settee and using it. Settees can come in loveseat and daybed variations – in which the settee features two distinct seat cushions and one extended seat cushion, respectively.
Styling with a Settee
If your living room needs extra seating, but you don’t have room for another sectional or sofa, consider a settee. Just a tad longer than a regular chair, but offering double the seating space, settees can fit in just about any corner of any room. For a classic living room aesthetic, place a settee at an angle to a sofa or loveseat so that the two pieces form an ‘L,’ or simply keep a settee front and center, as the sole seating of a smaller room (like a hallway or home office). You can even place a settee against the foot of your bed for an extra cozy bedroom look.
Because most settees come without armrests, it can be difficult to style more than a couple throw pillows on a settee without having the pillows fall off – so, if you must incorporate pillows into your settee style, stick to one or two.
If you are considering a settee as a standout accent piece, go for one in a vibrant color like yellow or blue, or keep it in a neutral to complement a warm, earthy color scheme.
Settees as Extra Seating for Children’s Bedrooms
Settees are also an easy way to incorporate lounge-style seating in a kid’s bedroom. Look for shorter designs that you know will fit in your child’s space (and always measure the space beforehand!). Other ‘small’ areas perfect for settees similar to children’s rooms include game rooms (or spare/guest rooms), studio apartments and dorms.
The Difference Between a Settee and a Loveseat
Settees and loveseats are both popularly embraced for their compact silhouettes and spacious seating capabilities, but there is often confusion when it comes to the differences between the two. While both settees and loveseats are ‘extended’ chairs – and both can seat more than one person – the main difference between the two is that loveseats are designed to seat two people, and settees are designed to seat ‘a minimum of’ two people. Settees, in other words, come in different forms and sizes that can allow for two, three or sometimes even four seats, while loveseats are defined by a two-person capacity.
