Choosing the right foundation for your new mattress is a big part of getting the comfortable night’s sleep you crave. Without solid support, your mattress won’t last as long, and it could even create pressure points on your body as you shift position throughout the night. But which type of foundation is right for your bed?
Bunky Board vs. Box Spring
A box spring is a classic foundation for your mattress. Originally designed with coiled springs to push back against a spring mattress, today’s box springs are more like fabric-covered frames designed to support and raise up a mattress. They are often about 6 inches thick and add height by raising the mattress up off the bed frame, making them a good choice for traditional furniture suites.
A bunky board, on the other hand, is a mattress foundation with a slim, low profile. Instead of a frame with a few crosspieces, it is a solid plywood board that is covered in fabric. It’s meant to provide support for a mattress without adding too much height, making it a great choice for modern furniture or "floating" bed platforms.
Do You Need a Bunky Board?
If you have a memory foam or gel mattress, a bunky board is the perfect choice to help your sleeping surface last. Slats and traditional box springs have spaces between wood supports that your foam mattress could slip through, and this will eventually cause your mattress to deteriorate. A solid-surface foundation provides even support for foam mattresses. Bunky boards can be placed on top of a traditional box spring or over a slatted foundation.
Bunky boards also work to support spring mattresses, and they’re a good choice if you prefer a low-profile bed.
To make sure you choose the right bunky board for your mattress, be sure to order a matching size. If you’re unsure about your mattress or bed size, use a tape measure to help you decide what size you have:
- Twin: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Twin XL: 39 inches wide x 80 inches long
- Full: 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Queen: 60 inches wide x 80 inches long
- King: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
- California King: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long
Note that bunky boards for large mattresses can often be purchased as a set of two pieces. Because bunky boards aren’t flexible, two smaller boards make it easier to ship and install a large base in your bedroom.
