California King Size Bed
The difference between a California King — also known as a Cal King — and a Standard King is the size and shape of the mattress. A Standard King mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, which is the same length as a Queen and Twin XL mattress.
A California King size mattress, on the other hand, is slightly narrower but longer than a regular King. It measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, giving it a larger overall sleeping area than a Standard King.
To make sure you get a bed you love that will work in your decor for years to come, consider the following tips before you shop for your new bed:
- Measure Your Room: Large beds can be tricky to move into a home or apartment, so make sure you take accurate measurements of your bedroom. It can help to use masking tape to outline just how big a California King is, and you can see how much space it takes up in your room before you buy.
- Remember the Doorways: Be sure to measure any doorways and hallways you’ll need to pass through as well. Most beds come in pieces to be assembled, and a California King box spring or other mattress foundation is often split into two pieces to make handling easier.
- Add a Few Inches for the Bed: The mattress size is one thing, but unless you’re choosing a simple metal bed frame, your bed will have extra width all the way around to accommodate the headboard, footboard and side rails.
