Learn to Live Luxe for Less with Copy Cat Chic

When I was eight years old, I would spend hours pouring over my mom’s Better Homes and Gardensmagazines and rip out tear sheets. And every six months, I’d redecorate my room. I’d also redecorate my friends’ rooms during playdates. I never thought becoming an interior designer was realistic for me, but I pretty much always had a passion for design. So come college time, I majored in computer graphics.

Growing up with a single mom, we were always very aware of money and what we spent it on. I remember shopping at a lot of second-hand stores and flea markets. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I learned to appreciate higher-end and designer products. So when you combine my early years of scrimping with my love of luxury goods, my current motto was born: Luxe living for less.

When my husband and I bought our first home in 2006, we were very “house poor”, which meant we didn’t have a lot of money left over after paying the monthly mortgage. That made outfitting the house a bit of challenge! I really had to get creative with decorating, so I’d spend hours scouring the internet for cheaper alternatives to my favorite furniture and décor. I would share my finds with friends and family and that’s when Copy Cat Chic was born.

When it comes to decorating a space, I always like to figure out the priorities: which item in the room will play the most functional role? If it’s a bedroom, it’s the bed of course. In a living room, it’s the sofa. So that’s where I usually decide to do a little splurging. That’s also where most people will notice those extra dollars well spent. Once you have the big purchases down, that’s when personal preference has a bigger influence: colors, shapes, textures, all that fun stuff.

For example, my home is very neutral, but I like to play with pattern and texture. It’s so important to be aware of what you like and don’t like before you start purchasing. Even if you don’t know what your decor style is, you can borrow from your fashion likes and dislikes. I’ve found that the way I like to dress is very, very similar to the way I like to design my home.

When I first started blogging back in 2008, nobody ever thought that blogging could be a full-time job. I feel very lucky to have stumbled into it. I’ve had to learn as I go because it’s such a fast growing field. I’ve heard they now teach classes on how to blog and make money doing it!

My word of advice for any new bloggers out there? Be authentic, be honest and be consistent. I think that last tip is the most important. When you’re just starting out, it’s vital to post regularly. I’d recommend posting at least once a week if you’re a part-time blogger. When I made the transition to full-time blogging, I started posting every day!

The thing I like best about being a blogger is how it keeps you on your toes. It’s very sink or swim, which helps keep things exciting! If, for some reason, I decided not to blog anymore, I’d probably still be super involved with social media. Maybe I’d just focus on YouTube or Instagram. . . or whatever social media channel comes next! The possibilities are endless.
