Types of Sofas
- Loveseat: Loveseats are smaller versions of sofas. They typically seat two people and are designed with two seat cushions, two back cushions and two armrests. They make great additions to small spaces and can be doubled up for more seating in larger spaces.
- Sectional Sofa: Sectional sofas are what you would get if you were to join two sofas together. Named for their “sections,” these designs feature a corner seat, which forms a right angle for two rows of seating. These designs are best placed in corners of rooms, to align with the corner of the seats. Great for larger households, choose this sofa type if you want to maximize your lounging options.
- Sleeper Sofa: A sleeper sofa is a sofa that contains a mattress inside it. The mattress can pull out when needed for an overnight guest or an extra bed. When not in use, the mattress tucks back into the sofa and the sofa cushions are placed on top of the mattress to hide it. When not in use, sleeper sofas look just like regular sofas.
- Modular Sofa: A modular sofa is a sectional that can be rearranged. Usually, this means that the sectional contains a chaise on one end and two seats on the other end; the chaise and seats can be switched from left to right as needed.

A Note on Material + More Sofa Types

How to Create Your Ideal Living Space
You know you need a living room refresh – but where to start? When thinking about your shopping, designing and decorating decisions for your ideal living room, the best place to start is with measurements. Take into account the size of your space. Take a measuring tape and, with the help of another person, hold one end of the tape from the furthest corner of the room and the other end at the opposite. Note the length: this will come in handy when choosing the perfect sofa that’s neither too big or too small for your home.
Secondly, consider your color scheme. Considering a sofa just because it is comfortable may feel good – but looks are also important! Take a look at the pieces you already have. What color is the coffee table? Wall mirror? TV stand? Rug? Walls? Drapes? (And so on and so on!) If each of these things is more or less a similar color, or contributes to an overall palette that is no more than two or three colors, then your sofa should follow suit; choose a sofa color in the same color as the rest of your living room. (Now, if the list of colors in your living room is long, say longer than four, then consider removing or replacing the pieces in the room for a more minimalist color palette – and an easier-to-style space.)
Finally, consider material. In a sofa, material isn’t just about feel (though how it feels against your skin is important, too). Along with feel, consider your household. Do you have children or live with pets? How often do you use your sofa? In what circumstances do you and your household use your sofa? Is food ever involved when seated – or drinks? Depending on how often you might expect spills or messes, you may consider a fabric type easier to clean; performance upholstery is made for just this purpose. If you entertain a lot or expect your sofa to be used multiple times a day for long periods, you will want to look into an option designed for durability and which won’t show signs of wear and tear; features such as thickness of material, the weight of the sofa’s legs and frame and density of the cushion contents will contribute to its longevity.
