I have this bed, It is 17inches from the base where the mattress sits to the bottom of the head board. I have a box spring on mine. Hope this helps!

About right for the price
A bit pricey, but overall good quality. It is a toe and shin killer, so be careful. Overall I like the style quite a bit. Good quality, so it won't break easily. I would recommend the relatively small additional cost to get the better durability and quality.
