Don't want to waste the boxspring that I already have, but am afraid the bed will be to high with it.
I don’t think so. A box spring would cover too much of the head board. It would look odd.

What is the spacing between the slats? Would it need an additional base with a memory foam mattreess?
The slats on the Allen Eastern King Panel Bed with Storage are 3 inches apart. Please refer to the mattress manufacturer to see what the recommended slats distance is for your particular mattress.
