The Bohemian Drilldown
What Is Boho Style? Here’s a fun fact: the term boho originates from the French word bohemien, coined in the late 1800s, used to describe ‘gypsies.’ These ‘gypsies’ were actually Romani immigrants, living on the margins of society. Their culture was romanticized because they lived unconventionally; eventually the term came to mean any artist, student, or intellectual who adopted a nonconformist lifestyle with few possessions. Today, ‘boho’ is most associated with a design style that celebrates free-spirited vibes.
Above all, the boho color palette should feel inspired and completely yours. To maintain a relaxed feel, stick to the 60-30-10 rule: 60% of the color focus should be on the most prominent, 30% on your key accent color, + 10% shared among the remaining accents that provide balance to the other two.
Materials, Finishes & Details
To seal in a boho aesthetic, incorporate woven materials like seagrass or rattan, plants (and more plants!), tassels, fringe and layered textiles. And don’t forget about accent beads and garland – both of which will make the space feel well-traveled and full of wanderlust!
Color is one of the impactful and important design elements, helping to interpret our surroundings. Surround yourself with color you love from a palette that inspires you to be your best self.
Soft, cozy textiles like woven pillows, layered throw blankets, + textured shag rugs add warmth + comfort. Surrounding yourself with these types of products is proven to help calm nerves + assist with relaxation.
Think personalization; look for ways to customize your space so that it tells your story + feels like home to you. That could mean surrounding yourself with collected finds from recent trips or simply adding a personal, unique touch using a custom order item.
SOFT COLOR + LIGHTING: In your bedroom space, consider keeping the palette subdued. Having bright, saturated colors tends to make our eyes work harder, preventing natural relaxation. Opt for indirect, soft lighting using illuminated lamps or glowing pendants. Avoid direct task lighting or overhead lighting from the ceiling fan.
AIR QUALITY: Regularly ridding your bedroom sanctuary from dust or other pollutants can help your ability to rest naturally. Consider adding an air purifier, salt lamp, or plants like ‘snake plant’ to improve the air quality.
- GET QUALITY SLEEP: Fun Fact! You spend approximately 1/3 of your life sleeping. Shouldn’t we all have a mattress we love? Having a space + a mattress where you can get quality sleep should be a key focus when planning your bedroom sanctuary. Find a mattress that not only provides the right comfort, but also the right support for your body + sleeping position.
- THINK PLUSH: As with the boho style, surrounding yourself with soft textures and layers helps us feel safe, secure, + surrounded in luxury. Consider softer materials, layered pillows/blankets, soft rugs, + upholstered headboards.
