Black Area Rugs
For the ultimate in drama and sophistication, choose a black area rug. A small solid-color black area rug packs a big punch, especially in a predominantly white room, while a patterned rug in varying shades of black or in multiple textures adds complexity and makes the colors around it pop. Shades of charcoal in geometric or abstract patterns look modern in contemporary living rooms and family rooms.
Like white, black makes an excellent background color on multicolored patterned area rugs. In the case of black, the type of pattern you choose is especially important because of the big impact it has on the entire decor scheme. There's a world of difference between a feminine charcoal and ivory floral, which would be lovely in a dressing room, and a multicolored ikat or chevron on a black background that's more suitable for a den or library.
Take a chance on bright, contrasting colors like orange or lime green with black to add pizzazz to a teenager's bedroom. Make sure it has a tightly woven pile made of sturdy nylon, polyester or polypropylene for years of easy-care wear.
