Bed Foundations for a Longer Mattress Lifespan
All types of mattress require a foundation, whether through a platform bed frame, smart box spring or a separate base. For queen size, cal king, high profile and spring mattresses, the types of foundations available are designed to offer superior mattress support.
Solid wood bed bases provide excellent support for your mattress (and you). However, solid wood beds and bases are rare . . . and, because of the material, expensive. In lieu of a completely solid bed base, box springs and foundations with slats offer necessary support for all mattresses.
Traditional box springs are needed for beds other than platform beds. Because of the bed base in non-platforms, the mattress doesn’t get enough surface area to stay properly lifted. This is where wood slats and metal box springs come in.
A series of long panels (imagine a xylophone), box springs with metal bases or wooden slats offer perfect mattress support. In most foundation designs, it’s also what’s underneath the slats that contributes to the efficacy of the whole: center support legs, along with the four corner legs, ensure superb security and can even prevent bed squeaking.
