What Is a Tufted Loveseat?
A tufted loveseat features a button-tufting design. In most tufted loveseats, the button tufting – a design technique in which small buttons are sewn into upholstery to form a pattern of small ‘tufts’ – appears across the surface of the loveseat’s backrest.
Once the hallmark of the traditional style, button tufted loveseats (and button tufting in general) is more and more making its presence within the mid-century modern and other contemporary styles. This is not necessarily because of the aesthetic of the tufting itself, but because of the types of designs on which tufting is appearing. In a loveseat, button tufted upholstery over a sleek silhouette with tapered legs and a bold, colorful finish brings a plush, textured effect to an overall contemporary design.
Button Tufted Patterns
When it comes to the patterns formed by the button tufts themselves, more vintage looks embraced diagonal lines, in which the button tufts formed rows across the loveseat’s back, from the left bottom corner to the upper right corner. Now, however, it is becoming more and more popular for loveseats to feature horizontal or vertical lines of tufting for a crisper, geometric appeal.
Tight Back Tufted Loveseats
In a loveseat, tight back seating is a feature marked by a lack of plush cushioning along the loveseat’s backrest. (Plush padding isn’t completely absent from a tight back loveseat – just minimized.) While tufted upholstery and tight back seating are often one and the same, they aren’t mutually inclusive, and many tufted loveseats will feature a backrest just as plush as a non-tufted model. Tight back button tufting, however, is a common feature among many contemporary styles.
Styling with a Tufted Loveseat
In smaller rooms, tufted loveseats blend seamlessly – they are just big enough to provide ample seating yet small enough to not take over tight spaces.
One of the easiest ways to pull together a small room – especially if it is an office or reading nook – is by placing a tufted loveseat under a window. The natural light will highlight the simple elegance of a tufted loveseat and the bright, airy space will make for pleasant, leisurely lounging.
Just as with any other type of loveseat, throw pillows are an effortless way to spruce up the style. This is especially true for tight back tufted loveseats, which lack the plusher cushioning of standard tufted designs.
