Understanding Grey Undertones
Since grey is neutral, it can often go with literally every color. While this is true for true grey (black + white + nothing else), grey with undertones (black + white + a hint of yellow, or red, or blue, etc.) won’t always necessarily look good with any given aesthetic.
The easiest way to tell a certain grey’s undertones is to hold it up next to another grey piece. Hold up, for example, a grey wooden spoon against a grey nightstand. Does the nightstand look a little more bluish than the spoon? If so, it has blue undertones. If it appears more yellowish, it has yellow undertones, and so on. If you can’t really tell a difference, it might be because both objects have the same undertones; keep comparing different grey items until you do notice a difference. (An alternative method is to hold up brightly-colored objects next to the grey. If a nightstand has blue undertones, it will be obvious when compared next to a bright blue shirt.)
